Toney had a remarkable career from 1988 to 2017. He took part in various global competitions which included three weight classes. He won the heavyweight championship in 2005 but failed to claim the title due to a fake drug test conspiracy. In his entire career, he has fought in four weight classes and participated in fifteen world title championships. He also had one fight in the UFC in 2010 with Randy Couture where he lost.

Toney was an outstanding counter-puncher and used a shoulder roll defense technique learned from veteran trainer Bill Miller. Toney possessed the ability to box with remarkable speed and power. The Ring Magazine crowned him ‘Fighter of the Year’. He also made it to the list of best boxers by the Boxing Writers Association of America. After his successful career, Toney became a trainer where he had trained Ezzard Charles, who is also a legend of the boxing world.
